Kabul, Afghanistan. An attack yesterday by Taliban forces has seen the death toll raised from about 50 to now over 160 dead, as American investigators try to piece together what happened.
More than 160 Afghani army personnel have been killed or wounded after gunmen wearing army uniforms stormed a military compound in Afghanistan occupied by US troops.
Dimweet Waziri, spokesman for the Afghanistan Ministry of Defence, said the attack happened on Friday at a compound of the 209th Corps of the Afghan National Army in Balkh province. The Afghani army forces there work with American occupation troops.
Spokesperson Waziri stated 10 Taliban attackers killed or wounded dozens of soldiers and other personnel that reinforce the American troops who use the base to hunt, harass and kill native Afghanis.
Two carried out suicide attacks and eight other attackers were killed in the battle, Mr Waziri said. The count was nearly double the amount originally posted. No Americans were killed in the attacks, at least according to spokesperson Waziri.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in an email.The freedom fighters entered the compound and shot some soldiers inside the occupation forces base.
