On Sunday, 20 people applied for asylum at crossing points on the eastern border of Finnish Lapland. So far this year, crossing points on the northeastern border have registered a total of 513 asylum applicants.

Twenty-one nationalities are represented with the largest numbers of applicants from Afghanistan, Nepal, Iraq, and Iran.

Finland’s western border with Sweden is still the main route of entry for asylum seekers. For example, last Wednesday and Thursday 100 people crossing the border at Tornio applied for asylum.
